Cook Children's Community Education at Mayfest

Cook Children's experts educate more than 2,000 families in three days

Summary

Save the Date for next year's Mayfest: May 4-7, 2023

Cook Children’s return to Mayfest began in 2014 and was coordinated by Kendra Stubbs, DPT & Sharon Evans, RN. Through their existing collaboration and support from Cameron Brown, D.Min., M.Div., BSSW, the Peaks & Ladders Committee and Grant Harris, SVP, chief development officer, they implemented their vision of injury prevention at the largest children’s event in Fort Worth.

In 2016, Greg Clark, AVP, Business Development and Community Relations, saw the benefit of this outreach and the event was moved under his department. The original team still coordinates the effort in conjunction with  Community Relations.

What started with a handful of volunteers has grown into a system-wide initiative to support Our Promise with a vast array of staff who are committed to educating our community on injury prevention, as well as employment and insurance coverage opportunities.

This year, we had more than 60 volunteers from multiple departments including:

  • Emergency Department
  • Neurology
  • Trauma Prevention
  • Education
  • Build-A-Bear
  • Talent Management
  • Health Plan
  • Bone Marrow Registry
  • Safe Kids

Our efforts reached more than 2,000 people, who were educated on:

  • Hyperthermia Prevention
  • Drowning Prevention
  • Gun Safety
  • Employment Opportunities
  • Cook Children’s Health Plan

On “Friday Fun” day, Peaks made a special appearance and we educated teachers of children with special needs on our JOY Campaign and local camps for children with special needs.
