Kanika Bowen-Jallow, M.D, Delivers UTMB Commencement Address

Kanika Bowen-Jallow, M.D., a pediatric surgeon at Cook Children’s - Prosper, makes an impact inside and outside the operating room


On Saturday, June 4, Kanika A. Bowen-Jallow, MDEM, pediatric surgeon at Cook Children's - Prosper, delivered the commencement address at her alma mater, The University of Texas Medical Branch. She inspired a new generation of diverse physicians by addressing mental health, diversity, the importance of finding meaningful work, gun violence and more.

She quotes Theodore Roosevelt as she encourages graduates to continue striving for greatness: “It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again because there is no effort without error...” 

Dr. Bowen-Jallow made national headlines in 2021 for being a trailblazer as the ninth Black female pediatric surgeon in the United States.
