Physician Network Top Peak Performer 2021

Stephanie Ogburn, Diabetes Education Coordinator, Endocrinology

Stephanie Ogburn & Dr. Dzurik

Stephanie is a leader on our diabetes team! She has been in the endocrine department for 6 years and her commitment to Our Promise is strong. Stephanie is an expert in advancing diabetes technology and helps to relay that information to our families and ways they can understand. Her service extends locally as a team leader for the JDRF, a national diabetes advocacy group, and even to our Cook Children’s "Camp Lancelot". Stephanie is a familiar face and voice that our patients and families can trust.

When an education shortfall was noted for our oncology patients receiving endocrine care, Stephanie stepped up to the task to find a solution. Working alongside endocrine physicians and oncology staff, a program was developed and implemented to clearly define the treatment plan and education needed. The QI project is still underway, but within our own department, I can already see the benefits of her hard work.

In addition, Stephanie has helped our diabetes team maintain our technology program and keep it up to date. She takes extra time to contact companies to ensure they provide our patients with the technical resources they need to manage their diagnosis. Stephanie maintains our list of available technology and stays updated on new products. She takes personal time to stay involved in the Type 1 diabetes community and is an asset to our team. We appreciate all she does for the program!

Stephanie puts her heart and soul into working with our families. She shows compassion, understanding, and patience with each family. We consistently receive positive feedback after Stephanie provides education in the hospital, in the clinic, in classes, or over the phone. They often remark that Stephanie has made them feel much more at ease with this new, often overwhelming diagnosis. Not only does she do in-person family educating in the clinic, Stephanie also conducts telemedicine consultations. On top of that, she helps swamped co-workers with newly diagnosed patients. Due to COVID-19, Stephanie helped one our international families complete telemedicine consultations. She answered any questions the family had, at any time of the day.

Stephanie is literally a lifesaver at Cook Children's because if Type 1 diabetes is not well managed for a child, it can mean life or death. She inspires those around her, and she is a Superstar in our eyes! I cannot think of anyone else more deserving of the Peak Performer Award!
