Prosper Employees, Leaders Come Together to ‘Strike Out Sepsis’

Cook Children’s Medical Center - Prosper held its first annual celebration of World Sepsis Day to serve as a reminder to staff to remain vigilant against sepsis. With lots of energy, conversation and connection, employees filled the room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 to “Strike Out Sepsis.”

The baseball-themed event displayed the collaboration of teams across the Medical Center - Prosper to identify and prevent sepsis cases, and actions to take when a patient is confirmed with the condition. Alongside information and education, employees enjoyed popcorn and Cracker Jacks (plus many other goodies).

Employees learned signs and symptoms of sepsis, emphasizing early detection and treatment.

“Preventing and identifying sepsis requires us all to be vigilant to keep our patients healthy and safe,” said Morgan Cotton, Clinical Risk & Quality Improvement Supervisor at CCMCP. “Every day, the actions we take protect our patients from life-threatening infections. This event helps our team have the most up-to-date, evidence-based information to screen for sepsis and how to find support and resources if needed.”

Nine departments and programs hosted games and prizes at their tables, providing interactive education among employees.

• Data on sepsis cases in the US
• Signs of sepsis
• How to initiate a sepsis alert
• Elements of the sepsis scoring tool 
• Proper PPE usage to prevent the spread of infection
• Central line care
• Hand hygiene and glove changes
• Collecting blood cultures and emphasizing correct blood volume
