Team Peak Performers: Microbiology/Molecular Lab Department
The Microbiology/Molecular Lab Department are Team Peak Performer recipients for the second quarter of 2022 (January-March). Below is their nomination letter.
From the very beginning of this pandemic, the microbiology department has been tasked with performing Covid testing for the entire hospital, including patients that aren’t admitted. To say the workload has been rough would be an understatement. To date, this department has performed more than 75,000 Covid tests.
Our clinicians and hospital as a whole rely on the information we provide in order to allow the medical center to be as effective and efficient as possible. Despite multiple severe inventory issues that would have prevented us from keeping Our Promise, Dr. Morgan Pence, clinical microbiologist, stayed resilient and incorporated several new ways of testing for Covid. This also includes our most recent antigen testing for those not usually qualified for in-house testing.
Our department is very small and as such, this increased workload on top of our normal testing volume has strained each of us both mentally and physically. Whether we need a mental rest day or coverage for those who are sick or caring for those who are sick, I'm very proud that the microbiology/molecular department is so supportive of each other. For example, we have been understaffed for over a year now and our supervisors, Christina John and Joy Obuekwe, have stepped up to perform bench work on top of their regular supervisor duties in order to lessen the strain on everyone else. Their willingness to go above and beyond has personally been a huge motivator to keep grinding and do the best that we can.
