Tonya Fuqua, DDS, Named Veteran Of The Year By Fort Worth District Dental Society

Tonya Fuqua, DDS, a Southlake dentist and founder of the nonprofit Save a Smile dental program, has been named Veteran of the Year by the Fort Worth District Dental Society (FWDDS). The annual award recognizes the military service of FWDDS members.

Dr. Fuqua is the director of Child Oral Health under the Center for Children’s Health at Cook Children’s. In 2003, she created and started Save a Smile, a nonprofit dental program at Cook Children’s, which has provided more than 100,000 dental screenings for at-risk children in Tarrant County. Over $10 million in comprehensive dental care has been provided utilizing private practicing volunteer dentists from the community.

Dr. Fuqua served four years as an active-duty dental officer with the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1995-1999. Stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, she provided dental clearances and dental work for soldiers in all branches of the military. She also served as Preventative Dentistry Office and Manpower Disaster Team chief, leading a group of airmen from the dental clinic to prepare and serve during a peace or wartime disaster. Dr. Fuqua achieved the rank of Major before moving into private practice.

The daughter of a “full bird” Colonel, Dr. Fuqua says she will never forget her years in uniform. “My father set a strong example of service and selflessness, Dr. Fuqua said. “I am extremely humbled and appreciative to have been able to give back in this honorable way.”

In 2019, Dr. Fuqua was inducted into the International College of Dentists (ICD) College of Fellows at the World Dental Congress in San Francisco. ICD is a leading international honor society of dentists which represents 12,000 Fellows in 122 countries. She was selected to participate in the prestigious American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s VI Cohort, led by the Leadership Institute at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Dr. Fuqua also served as Director of the Child Study Center Dental Clinic, led the legislative committee for the Children’s Oral Health Coalition, and chaired the annual Give Kids a Smile event for the Fort Worth District Dental Society, benefiting hundreds of local children.
