For the past 30 years, the Cook Children's Physician Network (CCPN) has been a cornerstone in the institution's remarkable growth and development. Its influence extends far beyond simple numbers, fostering a culture that prioritizes both child well-being and physician satisfaction.

Shared Values, United Purpose

Britt Nelson, M.D., CCPN's president from 2009 to 2021, recalls a pivotal moment in the late 1990s. A group of physicians, including himself, gathered to establish core values and a mission statement for the network. One of the resulting values, "Every child's life is sacred," mirrored a sentiment already deeply embedded within Cook Children's. "We were so proud to see that line become a pillar of our Promise a few years later," Dr. Nelson reflects.

Building a Cohesive Unit

CCPN's achievements extend far beyond symbolic moments. From establishing the Teddy Bear Transport program to bringing ECMO technology to Cook Children's, their focus has remained unwavering: creating a seamless and coordinated experience for both patients and physicians.

"Ensuring a smooth journey for our patients, with primary care doctors and specialists working together as a cohesive unit, has always been a core principle for CCPN," Dr. Nelson explains. "Our dedication to what's best for the child is what truly draws people to our organization. We strive to be servants for our patients and their families, and that commitment resonates deeply."

A Legacy of Leadership

CCPN's story began in 1994 with Alan Lassiter, M.D., at the helm. Back then, physicians operated private practices while maintaining contractual relationships with Cook Children's. CCPN's innovative philosophy aimed to integrate new subspecialties and primary care physicians into a unified network. Dr. Nelson joined this network in 1996 and quickly became a key figure, serving on the board before assuming the role of president after Dr. Mark Laney's departure.

Dr. Nelson's leadership tenure paved the way for Matthew Dzurik, M.D., who currently steers CCPN forward. Jim Cunningham, M.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Cook Children's, offered high praise for Dr. Dzurik: "Dr. Dzurik has consistently impressed us with his exceptional clinical skills and exceptional leadership qualities. He fosters a supportive and compassionate environment within the organization and is highly respected by his peers. Dr. Dzurik has already initiated impactful changes, prioritizing physician well-being and addressing burnout. "While maintaining the fantastic work we do here at Cook Children's is essential, I also believe a fresh perspective is invaluable. The healthcare landscape is evolving, and so are the needs of physicians and future generations," Dr. Dzurik remarked upon assuming his position. "This evolution will significantly impact our network. Striking a balance between our rich history and innovative ideas will be paramount as we move forward together, building upon the strengths of both worlds."
