Have You Checked Out Our New CookNet? After months of working on the new CookNet, which had a soft launch last week, we're eager to hear your feedback. Meanwhile, join us in a huge standing ovation for the team members named here for their diligence in bringing this project to fruition! Long before he became a health care executive, Rick W. Merrill was a West Texas boy with a guitar and a love for music. Today, he’s the president and CEO of one of the largest pediatric health care systems in the U.S., but music still holds a special place in his heart.
On this extraordinary episode of the Raising Joy podcast, Mr. Merrill opens up about his love for songwriting, parenting children through challenges, and leading an organization with empathy and compassion. He also shares a song he wrote, which was inspired by Cook Children’s Joy Campaign titled, “Hope is Just a Breath Away.”

It has taken almost three years to design, pilot, and fully implement a new process aimed at reducing errors during the bedside handoff – when important information about a patient is shared with team members coming on the next shift. Its name, ISHAPED, is an acronym standing for key elements in a standardized handoff process. The format guides a collaborative conversation aimed to ensure comprehensive sharing of information between the care team including nurses, the patients and families/caregivers.
Read how front-line nurses used the Cook Children's values of Imagination, Safety, and Collaboration to launch a new system for patient care. |

One Minute of Silence at Noon on Friday, May 12In honor of the victims of the shootings at Allen Premium Outlets mall, hospitals, and community members will observe a moment of silence at noon on Friday, May 12. The gesture will be an opportunity for North Texans to reflect on the loss of life over the past year from gun violence. Eight people were killed and seven injured during the shooting in Allen last Saturday, including three children. “The one-minute time frame on May 12 will be an opportunity to create awareness of the increase in gun violence in our community,” said Stephen Love, President/CEO of the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council (DFWHC). “We would like everyone to consider what they can do personally to reduce this trend. What can we do to stop this public health crisis?’” |
