Design Your Career Growth Plan in Workday

P&D DIgestA new component to employee Performance & Development (P&D) gives you a space in Workday to create a roadmap for enhancing your professional skills.

Career Growth Plan launches on Sept. 30, and you can add to it at any time. Career Growth Plan, used in partnership with your manager, is geared to support your success as a member of the Cook Children’s workforce.

To start, you’ll identify specific developmental goals or opportunities, which Workday calls Career Growth Items. For example: “Enhance my verbal communication skills” could be a Career Growth Item that feeds into your bigger Career Growth Plan.

A meaningful Career Growth Plan can help you name your aspirations and make others aware of what you’re hoping to achieve. Use the feature to set priorities, hone your strengths, fill in your gaps, and envision strategies to elevate your excellence on the job.

The framework includes:

  • Aspirations – What do you want your career growth to look like a year from now? Five years? Ten years?
  • Goals – What certifications do you want to complete? Do you want to learn a new skill, get better at an existing skill, or boost your leadership capabilities?
  • Action – What steps will help achieve the goal? Actions might involve shadowing a specialist, attending a seminar or enrolling in a course.

You’re also able to track milestones, resources and due dates using the feature.

“We want to be growth and development focused, where having conversations with staff about their careers is the norm,” said Merridth, Simpson, AVP Human Resources Operations. “I’m excited that Workday has a tool to help guide the discussions. Career Growth Plan is employee-driven and optional, but we hope that staff will take advantage.”

The progress you make in your Career Growth Plan won’t be an input into your performance evaluation. And it isn’t tied to compensation or promotion opportunities.

You’re encouraged to discuss your Career Growth Plan with your manager during check-in conversations. Your manager can offer advice and opportunities.

Coming Soon: Year-End Reviews

Employee evaluations start Sept. 16 under our new model for Performance & Development (P&D), a process that measures job performance.

What do you need to know?

First, there are no more anniversary review dates. We've shifted to a universal timeline. That means everyone except physicians and teachers, who are on a different track, will have their year-end performance evaluations during the same timeframe (September-October) from now on.

Another change is the 3-point scale, which calculates your overall performance rating as “Inconsistent,” “Strong” or “Exceptional.”

Performance evaluations capture feedback and insights enabling Cook Children’s to make informed talent decisions, including compensation. These year-end evaluations cover the period since October 2023. They consider various criteria, including:

  • Your biggest accomplishments and areas for development
  • How you carried out your job responsibilities
  • How you demonstrated Cook Children’s core values and culture platform

Managers have until Oct. 25 to complete the evaluations for their direct reports and conduct the year-end discussions.

Finally, you need to know the purpose behind the changes. Based on feedback from our leaders and employees, we created a more transparent and consistent process for employee reviews. P&D helps you strengthen your professional skills and helps maintain a top-notch workforce at Cook Children’s.

Please refer to the FY24 Year-End training, or the Year-End Performance Review Overview Job Aid for information about the 3-point rating scale. Click here to access these resourcesNOTE: Performance & Development information is item No. 4 under Workday Resources Hub in CookNet.

We’ve designed the 90-minute sessions to be informative and convenient, with various dates and times from Sept. 16-Oct. 3.
